Anson entered the Civil War at age 15 and was assigned to Company G, Second Wisconsin, serving as drum major and medic.
Anson's brother Archa received a gunshot wound to the neck at Brawner's Farm, August 28, 1862. Anson had held him in his arms briefly and assumed that Archa had died. Archa, however, was taken prisoner and eventually nursed back to health.
After his admission to the Northwestern Branch, Anson continued to serve in a musical capacity as a member of the Home Drum and Bugle Corps.
