While Vern was serving on his ship, ammunition blew up in his face, causing scarring and indentations to his face. A physician had to pound his teeth back in following the incident.

Vern met his wife, Diane, in 1966 and they married on October 21, 1971. Together they raised three sons, Brian, Kevin, and Jeffery. A welder by trade, Vern helped build the Milwaukee Main Post Office, dedicated in 1968. He also had belonged to Milwaukee Moose Lodge # 49 and the Legion of the Moose.

Vern loved to dance, play the drums, and was always the life of the party. Most of all, he was an excellent cook.
