Book chronicles 100 years of Soldiers’ Home history through 205 photographs.
With interest in the Soldiers’ Home on the rise due to its 2011 National Historic Landmark designation and recent efforts of preservation groups, author Patricia Lynch hopes readers will develop a new appreciation of the Home not as a monument to one era of veteran history—namely the Civil War, but as an institution serving veterans of all eras through constant adaption and, at times, reinvention.
Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home focuses on the first 100 years of the Northwestern Branch, National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, and its relationship to the surrounding communities. Favorite images include the toboggan slide, ski hill, and bleachers for veterans on the bluff above Milwaukee County Stadium. Photographs, including many never before seen or published, were gleaned from the archives of the Zablocki VA Medical Center as well as from local historical societies, city and county libraries, and individuals.
Copies of Milwaukee’s Soldiers Home are available from booksellers nationwide and from Arcadia Publishing.
Society continues its service to veterans and today’s military.
The West Side Soldiers Aid Society was founded in downtown Milwaukee December 1862 by some of Milwaukee’s prominent young women. Since its rebirth as a living history group in 2003, it has become a full-fledged soldiers’ aid society, supporting troops overseas and veterans in Wisconsin, especially patients of the Zablocki VA Medical Center. A member organization of VA Voluntary, the West Side Soldiers Aid Society serves the patient libraries and archives as well as the Adaptive Sports Club of the Spinal Cord Injury Center.
